Celebration of “Emancipation day”

On August 1, 1834, the Abolition of Slavery Act came into effect, freeing more than 800,000 people of African descent enslaved throughout the British Empire.

For many years, emancipation has been celebrated annually across Canada. In March 2021 Canadian members of parliament voted unanimously to designate August 1 of every year as “Emancipation Day” across Canada.

The spotlight is on Nova Scotia this year with a series of events to mark this special day: Emancipation Day – Nova Scotia – August 1 (emancipationdayns.ca)

Wherever you are, celebrate this important day for the people of African descent.
